On January 13th, although it was already winter vacation, Nie Yu, a senior student majoring in Landscape architecture design at Wuhan Textile University Birmingham College, still got up very early and started a day of IELTS exam review. At the end of last year, Nie Yu, who is only 1.3 meters tall, received conditional offers from prestigious universities such as the University of Manchester and the University of Edinburgh. After passing the IELTS score line, he plans to go to the UK for further studies.

Although his height was somewhat different from that of an ordinary person, this did not become a reason for him to stop running. He said that although he was petite in height, he also wanted to go out on his own feet and see the outside world.
The “pocket-sized” boy is his friend's “little sun”
In the past year, I won the first prize in the NCDA National Finals, the second prize in the National Finals of the Digital Media Art Competition, and other awards. I also received graduate offers from prestigious universities such as the University of Manchester and the University of Edinburgh. I will keep up the good work in the future! At the end and beginning of the year, Nie Yu, who is 22 years old this year, shared some good news on her Moments.

Whenever Nie Yu, with her petite figure and a big schoolbag on her back, walks around the campus, she always attracts a lot of attention. What they didn't know was that this petite yet cheerful and sunny boy was also the “top student” in their class. His academic performance has consistently ranked among the top in his class, he has received the National Encouragement Scholarship, and he is enthusiastic about public welfare... All these are just insignificant virtues of Nie Yu in the eyes of others. In the eyes of his classmates, he is a resourceful “little sun.”
“Every time there was something unclear about the group assignment, I would ask Nie Yu for advice. He was always very enthusiastic in tutoring us. ”Zhang Mengyao, a classmate of Nie Yu, said that although she noticed that he was different from ordinary classmates at the beginning of the term, he never took the initiative to trouble others. Instead, she and other classmates were always taken care of by him.
In the eyes of professional course teacher Xu Xiaoyi, Nie Yu is a very positive and enthusiastic “smart star.” He has a strong self-study ability. When completing his homework, he can always identify problems by himself and consult relevant materials to solve them. I am usually very cheerful and sunny when I am with my classmates. When doing group homework, I always actively put forward ideas and help other classmates with their tutoring. Xu Xiaoyi said.
In the eyes of his roommate Li Jiannan, Nie Yu is no different from the others. On the contrary, whenever his classmates encounter problems in their studies, he can always come up with ways to help solve them. The only difference from other roommates is that when drying large items, he and his roommates need to help Nie Yu hang the quilts and other things outside the guardrail which is higher than others.
When taking the art examination, I carried a drawing board half a person's height into the examination room alone
Because he is a bit different from others, Nie Yu has always been chasing after the path of “sameness.” When Nie Yu was in kindergarten, for the first time, she noticed from others' eyes that she seemed a little different from them. At that time, I didn't know I had dwarfism. I only knew that I was slightly shorter than other children and my legs were a little bent when I walked. Nie Yu said.

In order not to make her child feel special, before boarding in high school, Nie Yu mostly went to school with her classmates. Only when the weather was bad would her family come to pick her up and drop her off at school specially. By the time he lived on campus in high school, his parents would also let him tidy up and not spoil him in the slightest. Even during the art examination, my busy parents did not come to see me off. “When I was taking the art examination, the drawing board I carried was extremely large, almost as tall as half a person. Because the straps that couldn't reach the board were all tied by my classmates for me.” Nie Yu said with a smile.
It has always been his parents' demand for Nie Yu to be independent. Nie Yu said that his parents would not give up training his independence just because he was not tall enough. Before the college entrance examination, during the intensive training for the art examination, his parents did not ask for leave to take care of him due to tight preparation time or physical inconvenience. On the contrary, in order to train his autonomy, they even signed him up for a winter study tour camp abroad in high school, encouraging him to go further.
But independence is not that easy. In his hometown of Chongqing, the weather is hot in summer. The deep water accumulation after heavy rain always becomes an “insurmountable chasm” for him. He can only cross it with the help of others. When changing seats in the classroom, because his legs couldn't reach the ground and couldn't help him stand up, he could only use his hands to support the table and use the force to change seats. When going out for practice with other classmates and needing to rest due to health reasons, he still insisted on going along, striving to catch up with the other classmates' pace.
In this way, under the care of his family and friends, Nie Yu blazed a trail of his own “independence.”
Take big steps forward when facing difficulties
From Chongqing to Hubei, Nie Yu took the first step to “go out and see the world”, but he didn't stop there. In his junior year, he made the decision to study abroad in the future. In the second semester of my sophomore year, my parents and I began to think about our future direction. They even came to the school especially to have face-to-face communication with the teachers. Ultimately, after comprehensively considering the teacher's suggestions and the actual situation, Nie Yu's entire family made a decision to fully support him in going to a more distant place to “see.”

Since her junior year, Nie Yu officially began to prepare materials for studying abroad. The following weekends, Nie Yu had to take a one-hour bus ride to study relevant courses. Sometimes when there were too many people on the bus, he could only stand. At this moment, his legs, which were slightly different from others, always went numb easily. He could only comfort himself, “It's almost there.” In this way, he persisted for a year.
In addition, when preparing the portfolio for applying to foreign schools, he also taught himself relevant software for drawing. Whenever he had new works or questions he didn't understand, he would actively ask his teachers for advice. After more than forty revisions, a satisfactory work was finally completed.
Last November, when Nie Yu received a conditional offer from a prestigious foreign university, he was filled with countless emotions. I have always regarded myself as an ordinary person, not wanting to be different from others. Whenever I encounter difficulties, I take bold steps forward. Nie Yu said that both of his parents are very hardworking people and he wants to follow their example and become a child who can make his parents proud.
During her four years in university, Nie Yu achieved remarkable results and often reminded herself not to forget her original aspiration. When facing difficulties, he always sets a goal for himself and persists in achieving it step by step. Subsequently, the sense of satisfaction from achieving the goal will also encourage him to keep going.
Facing the upcoming life, Nie Yu is equally full of hope and confidence. Nowadays, while preparing for the IELTS test, he is also practicing his cooking skills, hoping to take good care of himself in a foreign land. In the future, he will also continue to carry this sunshine and confidence, and head to more distant places to see a larger world.
