The finalists for the 2026 International Federation of Landscape Architects Global Landscape Architecture Awards (IFLA GLA Awards) have recently been announced. Under the joint supervision of Han Jia, Qi Shu, and Zeqi Yu, a student design team from the Environmental Design Department of the Birmingham Institute of Fashion and Creative Arts at Wuhan Textile University—Yueshan Yu, Jiaxue Luo, Wenqing Peng, and Le Shu—has been named one of the three global finalists in the Student Category for Nature Conservation and Biodiversity for its ecological restoration design proposal focused on protecting finless porpoise habitat along the Yangtze River in Wuhan. The project is one of only three finalists selected in this category worldwide. The team has been invited to attend the awards ceremony in Hong Kong, China, in October, where the final winners will be announced. Warm congratulations to the faculty advisors and all participating students!

Project Introduction
The Yangtze finless porpoise is an important component of the Yangtze River ecosystem, and changes in its habitat provide a direct indication of the health of the broader river system. Research shows that urban expansion, waterway regulation, and industrial and agricultural activities have contributed to a range of interconnected ecological pressuresres, including habitat fragmentation, deteriorating underwater acoustic conditions, and disruptions to the aquatic food web. These impacts have further reduced available habitat and food resources for the Yangtze finless porpoise and placed increasing pressure on its survival. Against this backdrop, the project takes finless porpoise habitat conservation as its entry point and extends the focus from single-species protection to the restoration of the river ecosystem as a whole, exploring resilient design strategies that balance navigation, waterfront communities, and biodiversity conservation.
Drawing on the site’s ecological conditions and measured hydrological characteristics, the project adopts differentiated restoration strategies for distinct river sections and establishes an integrated ecological restoration framework built around sandbar conservation, fish-passage connectivity, flexible navigation management, and wetland filtration and purification. In doing so, site-specific ecological challenges are translated into coordinated spatial design and ecosystem management strategies.

Awards Ceremony Approaches
The 62nd IFLA World Congress will be held in Hong Kong, China, in October 2026 under the academic theme “Liminal Landscapes: Redefining Boundaries Between Watersheds and Coasts.” The IFLA GLA Awards ceremony will be a key event of the Congress, with the final winners in each category to be announced on site.
Being named one of the three global finalists is both a strong endorsement from the international judging panel of the project’s academic value, design innovation, and real-world relevance, and a direct reflection of the achievements of environmental design education under the Sino-British collaborative education model at the Birmingham Institute of Fashion and Creative Arts, Wuhan Textile University. The recognition marks an important milestone for the Institute’s integrated Chinese-British approach to international design education, bringing the achievements of its environmental design students onto the international stage of one of the profession’s leading global competitions.
